โครงการ Space Shuttle จะเหลือ mission อีก 2 ครั้งก่อนที่โครงการนี้จะปิดฉากลงอย่างเป็นทางการ  ทาง NASA มีโครงการที่จะให้ชาวเนทได้มีส่วนร่วมเป็นครั้งสุดท้ายโดยการส่งรูปตัวเองไปกับ Space Shuttle

เวปนี้จะให้เราเลือกส่งรูปไปกับ Mission อันใดอันหนึ่ง  โดยที่สุดท้ายเราจะได้เลข ID มาเพื่อพิมพ์ certificate หลังจากที่ mission นั้นเสร็จสิ้นแล้ว

ครั้งนี้ไม่ได้เป็นครั้งแรกที่ทางโครงการอวกาศเปิดให้คนทั่วไปได้มีส่วนร่วมอย่างนี้  อย่างเช่นการส่งชื่อไปกับยาน Kepler ซึ่งไปโคจรรอบดวงอาทิตย์  (blog post เดิม ที่นี่)  หรือการส่งภาพ scan ลายเซ็นไปกับยาน Cassini ไปยังดาวเสาร์ (อ่านต่อ ที่นี่)

Space Shuttle Atlantis has lifted of for the last time in a 12 day mission to International Space Station.  There are 2 more mission after this to service ISS with Space Shuttle Discovery and the final Shuttle mission on Space Shuttle Endeavour which will conclude NASA Space Shuttle program.

Space Shuttle program was dated back to early 1970s after Apollo program to the moon with the idea of reusable spacecraft that lift off like an rocket and landing like a airplane.  The first flight was lunched on 1981.  Almost 30 years later all 130+ but 2 mission are success.  The only accidents are with Challenger during lunch and Columbia during descend.  When Endeavour lunch and land later this year, it will be 134th shuttle mission to space.

After the mission has concluded, The Shuttle Discovery has already been promised to the Smithsonian Institution‘s National Air and Space Museum, and Atlantis, Endeavour, and Enterprise are planned to be sold to other education institutions or museums for $28.8 million each. 

Space industry cost lots of money and attract lot of attention to those who always look ‘up there’ and follow every space mission both US and Russia.  Some of them want a piece of history for their own….  They can!

everQuest design sells several design bags that use a piece of Soyuz TMA-3 main landing parachute as a material.  If you’re still in doubt, there is a certificate certifies the mission that parachute came from, what date, signed by Mission Pilot.  So you not only get a piece of space history but also cosmonaut signature..

Some of these Soyuz was docked at International Space Station as an emergency life boat for up to 6 months.  This particular mission Soyuz TMA-3 was flown during Oct 18, 2003 to Apr 29, 2004 (194 days).  So this is the real deal not some of the “15 second of fame” kind of thing.

This company also sells bag made from America’s Cup sail and iPod nano case mode from iPod Billboard material.  The price is quite high.  But what you’ve got is a piece of history.

เพื่อเป็นการเฉลิมฉลองครบรอบ 40 ปีในการไปเยือนดวงจันทร์  NASA ได้จัดทำเวป www.WeChooseTheMoon.org  จำลองการส่ง Apollo 11 ที่พานีล อาร์มสตรอง เอ็ดวิน อี-แอลดริน และไมเคิล คอลลินส์  ไปดวงจันทร์และได้ทำให้นีล อาร์มสตรองเป็นมนุษย์คนแรกที่ได้เดินบนดวงจันทร์

เวปนี้จะเริ่ม online ในเวลา 90 นาทีก่อนที่จะปล่อยจรวด (9:02AM EDTของวันที่ 16 ก.ค.)  และจะแสดงความคืบหน้าของ Apollo 11 ตามเหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นเมื่อ 40 ปีที่แล้ว  จุดที่จะพลาดไม่ได้ก็คือช่วง Moon Landing ในวันที่ 20

For those who wonder what astronauts said during mission back in ‘70s.  NASA has put up a full set of mission transcript from Mercury to Apollo mission.  There are many part to choose from such as Onboard Command module, Lunar module (Apollo mission) and ground control, each contain seveal hundreds pages of pdf file.

You can read through the moment Neal Armstrong say “One small step….” or when Jim Lovell say “Houston. We have a problem”

I recommend to get the Apollo 13 mission and compare the one we see in the movies.  Some say that the movie’s dialogue is quite accurate.

Just heard from the news that Iridium Satellite collided with defunct Russian Cosmos satellite creates huge cloud and some 600 space debris.

It is quite a rare event that 2 satellites collided in orbit especially one is the operational US satellite.   Communication relay satellite, Cosmos 2251 which was lunched in 1993 and was out of service more than 10 years while Iridium Satellite provides mobile telephone service globally.

I personally feel this story interesting since my work at Iridium Southeast Asia some time before Iridium LLC went Chapter 7 in 2000.  Then all the asset including satellite constallation were sold to Iridium Satellite LLC with the value about 10% of the original cost.  With its rebranding, the new Iridium service is quite success.

The ashes of Star Trek creator, Gene Roddenberry and his wife Majel will be launched into space.  Unlike, Gene ashes which was send into orbit by Space Shuttle Columbia STS-52 in 1997 and disintegrated during reenter the atmostphere, this time will never return.

For those who into Trek universe, he is like the father of all Trek.  Creator the StarTrek which spans 4 decades which includes 6 TV Series, 10 Movies (11th movie will release this year).  For Majel, everyone who watch Star Trek should remember the voice of on board Starship Computer and Lwaxana Troi on The Next Generation series.

Gene passed away in 1991 while Majel passed away on December 18, 2008.  She has contacted a company to launch Gene and her remains in to space, this time, without returning back to Earth.

ถึงแม้ว่าจะเริ่มต้นช้ากว่าสหรัฐหรือรัสเซียหลายปี  แต่โครงการอวกาศของจีนก็เดินหน้าอย่างต้องจับตามอง  เริ่มจากที่จีนส่งนักบินอวกาศไปโคจรรอบโลก  จาก 1 คนในปี 2546  เป็น 2 คนในปี 2548  และประกาศว่ามีโครงการที่จะนำมนุษย์ไปลงดวงจันทร์ภายในปี 2563  ทำให้หลายประเทศต้องพิจารณาศักยภาพของจีนในฐานะมหาอำนาจทางอวกาศ

จีนได้ประกาศในช่วงตรุษจีนที่ผ่านมาว่าภายในปีหน้า  จีนมีโครงการที่จะส่งสถานีอวกาศขึ้นไปโคจรรอบโลกโดยมีชื่อว่า Tiengong (เทียนกง)  และภายหลังจากที่ส่ง module ไปเพิ่มอีกในปีต่อๆ ไปก็จะให้มนุษย์อาศัยอย่างถาวรได้

คงจะต้องมาดูกันว่าจีนจะแซะหน้ามหาอำนาจอื่นๆ ในเรื่องอวกาศได้หรือไม่  ยิ่งเรื่องการส่งคนไปยังดวงจันทร์ที่ทั้งสหรัฐและจีนต่างก็มีแผนในเวลาไล่เรี่ยกันด้วย

ตามข่าวเรื่องการชุมนุมของพันธมิตรมาเกือบๆ จะ 6 เดือนแล้ว  มีเห็นด้วยบ้าง  ไม่เห็นด้วยบ้าง  แต่มาฟางเส้นสุดท้ายก็เมื่อคืนที่เคลื่อนพลมาปิดสนามบิน  ทำให้ต้องงดเที่ยวบินทั้งหมด  ทำให้ทั้งคนไทย คนต่างชาติเดือนร้อนไปหมด  รวมถึงคนที่เราอยากเจอมากที่สุดในตอนนี้ต้องติดอยู่ที่ Melbourne  ซึ่งยังไม่รู้เลยว่าจะได้กลับมาเมื่อไหร่

หวังว่าพวก พธม.คงจะได้รับผลจากการกระทำในครั้งนี้ในเร็ววันด้วย สาธุ

ตื่นมาตอนเช้านึกว่าจะได้ยินข่าวดี  กลับกลายเป็นว่าดอนเมืองก็ปิดไปตั้งแต่กลางดึก  ตกลงแผนการที่จะให้บินจาก Mel มาภูเก็ตแล้วหา domestic เข้าดอนเมืองก็คงต้องล้มไป  ตอนนี้ยังไม่รู้เลยว่าจะได้เจอกันเมื่อไหร่
