This is 5MB HDD!!!

In September 1956 IBM launched the 305 RAMAC, the first computer with a hard disk drive (HDD).  The HDD weighed over a ton and stored 5 MB of data.

Currie Munce, research vice president for Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (which has acquired IBM’s hard disk drive business), stated in a Wall Street Journal interview^[5] that the RAMAC unit weighed over a ton, had to be moved around with forklifts, and was delivered via large cargo airplanes. According to Munce, the storage capacity of the drive could have been increased beyond five megabytes, but IBM’s marketing department at that time was against a larger capacity drive, because they didn’t know how to sell a product with more storage.

ส่วนกล่อง External HDD ที่ใช้ USB 3.0 ก็เริ่มมีให้เห็นกันแล้ว   จากนั้นก็คงต้องมาดูว่าความเร็วขนาดนี้เวลาใช่ต่อกับ External HDD แล้วมันเทียบกับ eSATA ได้หรือไม่

NASA และ Microsoft ได้ร่วมกันทำแบบการมองเห็นของยานลำต่อไปที่จะไปดาวอังคารที่ชื่อว่า Curiosity  โดย Microsoft ใช้เทคโนโลยี Silverlight ที่เป็นคู่แข่งของ Flash มาใช้งาน  โดยที่เราสามารถ pan มุมมองได้แบบ 3 มิติ

ในที่สุดร่างมาตรฐาน WiFi ความเร็วสูง 802.11n  ก็ได้รับรองจากสถาบัน IEEE ให้เป็นมาตรฐานซะที  หลังจากที่แก้ไขปรับปรุงกันอยู่ถึง 7 ปี  แต่ยังไงก็ตามผู้ใช้และผู้ผลิตอุปกรณ์ส่วนใหญ่ยังใช้ 802.11g  หรือที่รู้จักกันว่า Wireless G กันอยู่   จะมีอยู่บ้างเช่น Apple ที่ใช้ draft N ในอุปกรณ์ของตัวเองมาพักใหญ่แล้ว

คงต้องดูกันว่ามาตรฐาน Wireless N ที่มีความเร็วสูงสุดถึง 300Mbps นี้จะได้รับการยอมรับเพิ่มขึ้นหรือไม่  หรือจะมองข้ามไปที่มาตรฐานต่อไปเลย

Plaxo was starting with address book and calendar online synchronize.  It had a rough start that everyone consider its invitation was spam.  But later it proved itself that it was a good application and very useful.  I have used Plaxo to sync my calendar and address book for more than 4 years and also backup to Yahoo and Google calendar.  It also has ‘Premium’ feature with subscription cost.

Until recently, Plaxo decide to move the Outlook sync feature to ‘Premium’ service.  The subscription fee of $49.95 per year is quite steep for me to just sync the pda.  So I have to say goodbye to Plaxo.

Please let me know is there any good and workable alternative for this.  I’m sure that there are a lot of  former users of Plaxo would like to know as well.

หลังจากต้นสัปดาห์ที่แล้วที่ Apple ได้เปิดตัว iPhone 3GS ที่มีคุณสมบัติเพิ่มขึ้นหลายประการ  และได้ขายอย่างเป็นทางการใน US เมื่อวันศุกร์ที่ผ่านมา  แต่สิ่งหนึ่งที่หลายคนอยากจะได้ยินในงาน WWDC ก็คือ Steve Jobs จะกลับมาเมื่อไหร่  ล่าสุดได้มีข่าวจาก Wallstreet Journal ว่าหลังจาก Steve Jobs ได้รับการเปลี่ยน (transplant) ตับไปเมื่อสองเดือนก่อน  เขาจะกลับมาภายในเดือนนี้  ลองดูนะครับว่าจะจริงอย่างที่ลือกันหรือเปล่า

WWDC ปีนี้หลายคนจับตามองว่า Steve Jobs จะกลับมาหรือไม่  หลังจากที่ลาพักรักษาตัวมาตั้งแต่ต้นปี

ส่วนทางด้านผลิตภัณฑ์ใหม่  ก็มีการเล็งว่า Mac OS X – Snow Leopard น่าจะออกมาได้แล้ว  ส่วน iPhone ตัวใหม่ (32 GB) และ MacBook ใหม่  ก็น่าจะมีการเปิดตัวในงานนี้ด้วยเช่นกัน

ในที่สุดหลังจากที่เป็นข่าวเมื่อต้นเดือนเมษายน (กับอีกเจ้า)  ในที่สุด Sun ก็ประกาศว่าบริษัท Oracle ยักษ์ใหญ่ทางด้าน Database และ application จะซื้อกิจการของ Sun Microsystems  ในราคา 7.4 พันล้านเหรียญ

เดิมเมื่อต้นเดือนก็มีข่าวทำนองนี้แต่ผู้ซื้อเป็นยักษ์ใหญ่สีน้ำเงิน IBM  แต่สุดท้าย deal ล้มไปด้วยราคาที่ต่างกับ Oracle เพียง 10 เซ็นต์  ไม่รู้ว่า IBM จะเสียใจหรือโล่งใจกันแน่
