This is 5MB HDD!!!

In September 1956 IBM launched the 305 RAMAC, the first computer with a hard disk drive (HDD).  The HDD weighed over a ton and stored 5 MB of data.

Currie Munce, research vice president for Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (which has acquired IBM’s hard disk drive business), stated in a Wall Street Journal interview[5] that the RAMAC unit weighed over a ton, had to be moved around with forklifts, and was delivered via large cargo airplanes. According to Munce, the storage capacity of the drive could have been increased beyond five megabytes, but IBM’s marketing department at that time was against a larger capacity drive, because they didn’t know how to sell a product with more storage.

Let me have my full USB drive

Last week I bought 2G Kingston DataTraveler 101R special edition (Year of the Rat) and plan to put my existing JetFlash 2G thumb drive as a file backup.

I expect this new USB drive to be empty or just has some bundled software in the drive but not the full locked partition with cripple software.  Kingston tech support confirm that it cannot be removed.  I may need to find a way to remove this partition in order to continue using my TrueCrypt security software.

They should have put a warning at the package that the bundled software cannot be removed.

So long Kingston.  If you continue doing this, you will not get my money again.

การแสดงผลงานก็เหมือนกัน  ไม่ต้องรอไปอัดรูปเป็นการดาษแล้วมาใส่กรอบแล้ว  สามารถเอารูป load ลงกรอบรูปดิจิตอลได้ทันที  ไม่ว่าจะใช้ thumb drive หรือจะเอา memory card มาเสียบก็ได้  แต่บางรุ่นที่หรูหน่อยก็จะมี Bluetooth หรือ Wi-Fi ทำให้สามารถ upload รูปผ่าน WLAN ได้

ส่วนราคาก็มีตั้งแต่ไม่กี่พันบาท (ของจีนแดง)  จนไปถึงเป็นหมื่นบาท  ตัว feature ก็จะเพิ่มขึ้นตามราคาที่จ่ายไป

ใครสนใจที่จะซื้อเป็นของขวัญสำหรับผู้ที่ชอบการถ่ายภาพก็น่าจะดีไม่น้อย

Thumb Drive woes

I just lost data from my corrupt 2G thumb drive.  I removed it from a hung notebook and the next time it is unreadable.  🙁  After a quick format and recovery software, I’ve got some data back but the file name is all changed.  Lots of trip schedule in the past and some of the information for future trip are gone.

So I would like to remind everybody.  DATA BACKUP is important event for your thumb drive.
